Tapas -- Meaning :  Tapappikuka; cudakkuka; Aviyakki vendatatu kalayal; ( Heating and removal of the unwanted ). To follow Upasana, by way : Japam, Puja, reading Scriptures, meditating daily, silencing the mind, associating with good people, listening to good persons, and apply to one's own life. Accepting a rule after patiently waiting with disciplined  ( Pure ) body, word, and mind.

Chapter-17.( Sraddha-traya-vibhaga-yogam )


Slokam-14, 15, 16.


Slokam-14. ( Tapas by body )


Devadvijaguruprajnapujanam      soucamarjjavam,



Brahmacaryamahimsa    ca   sariram    tapa    ucyate.



Deva-dvija-guru-prajna-pujanam       =       Offering pujas ( dedicated service ) to (1) Devas; [ divine people ( not present day aldaivam ie pretending human gods or wise persons ) ] (2) Brapmanas; wise & pure persons with  satvic & divine nature; ( not present day caste bramins ) (3) Gurus; Great masters transfer knowledge to disciples ( not present so called teachers who do hartals for their selfish motives) (4) Atma-Jnani-s; those who  attained atma-sakshatkaram,


Soucam    arjjavam      =      ( live in ) Cleanliness ( purity ); Straight forward; Truthful; and Honest,


Brahmacaryam     ahimsa     ca      =    ( following and practicing ) Brahmacaryam and ahimsa ( non-violence ),


Sareeram   tapah   ucyate      =      ( these are the things called as  ) tapas performed by body.



Upasana  or Puja : Effort by a seeker with great concentration of his mind on any upasana murthy, when concentrating mind on the Lord ( Eswaran ) gradually collect and accumulate Eswariya gunas or sampath -by sadhakan; Culture ( Samskarm ), Dharmic values, Disciplined development, and progress achieved through upasana. It is almost "Magnatisation."-we can say so..When an iron part is rubbed with a magnet the iron piece acquires magnetic  property, likewise the upasakan attains Eswariya Sampath. Upasakan should have the same attitude towards a Guru, Atmajnani, and Brapmana( dvijan ).


Dvijan means Brapmanan. The one who had Sakshatkaram of Brahmam is the true Brapmanan ( not today's caste bramins ). We born as human in our mother's womb. Though human beings have few skills of intelligence, we are adharmic in nature in many ways.../ We are in crude, primitive state and live in this prakruti ( prakruti gharbham ). From these limitations of our own self and the life filled with joys /sorrows of this prakruti ( nature) , uplift ourselves to the Lord and reach our goal. Thus the transformation from humanly nature ( manushyatvam ) to Godly nature ( eswaratvam ) is called as rebirth. One who had eliminated his jeevabhavam and entered  into Sivabhavam  is known as "DVIJAN," Brapmanan.


The importance of soucam and arjavam ( purity and straight forwardness ) already explained in the chapter-16, slokam-s 1 & 2. The external cleanliness of body, living place, utilities etc...are come under soucam.


The clean behaviour without any cheating ...etc, is called arjavam. One who does not follow arjavam , then his actions and thoughts will be corrupted. If the mind, word, and action are not one, and the opposite, the individuals  peace of mind, the mano veeryam and the calmness will be lost.


Brahmacaryam : ( Brahmani-carati-iti ) Regular search ( quest ) of brhamam is then brahmacaryam.When the indriyas (sense-organs) and mind extrovert, no can achieve brahmacaryam, divert the mind from the the external sensuous objects and concentrate on Inner-Self ( Atma ), practicing on this is called brahmacaryam. As we call student of medicine as doctor, likewise one who study the brahmam and follows his effort or search or quest is called  brahmacaryam.


Ahimsa : The non-violence and not effecting any injury with one's mind is known as ahimsa. It is difficult to follow ahimsa bodily. We many times do injury to others unknowingly. If you take care you can minimise this. A doctor to remove any diseased part of a body surgery is done, this may not be a himsa to a doctor. Hence avoiding himsa by mind is the real Ahimsa.


This way all explained above is tapas observed by body. Tapas is not causing injury to body. You must use the sense-organs, by keeping healthy and needful, essential relationships with the objects ( vishayas ) without loosing inner veeryam ( energy), and the intelligent art of living  is "TAPAS." Thus the carefully stored "VEERYAM" ( Energy ) must be used creatively in essential sectors.
