Srimad Bhagavadgeeta :
Chapter-17. ( Sraddha-traya-vibhaga-yogam )
Slokam-23. (Tells the way to purify Yajnam, Daanam, Tapas ).
OM TAT SAT ITI NIRDESAH BRAPMANAH TRIVIDHAH SMRUTAH,
BRAPMANAH TENA VEDAH CA YAJNAH CA VIHITAH PURA.
BRAPMANAH = To BRAHMAM,
OM TAT SAT ITI = OM TAT SAT THIS WAY,
TRIVIDHAH NIRDESAH SMRUTAH = THREE TYPES OF NAMES IN ORDER,
TENA = WITH THOSE THREE TERMS,
BRAPMANAH = THE CATUR VARNAS FROM BRAPMANA TO SUDRA, AND;
VEDAH CA YAJNAH CA = VEDAS AND YAJNAS,
PURA VIHITAH = CREATED FROM THE BEGINNING.
"OM, TAT, SAT" These three terms indicate Brahmam. These terms are pronounced during 'Yahnam, Daanam, Tapas' in order to solve the mistakes and drwabacks, which may occur by chance. For any actions the respective result is inevitable. The karma phalam ( fruit of action ) is developed not only depending upon the the external rituals, but also depending upon the stimulus or the influence, and the purity of the uddesh ( aim ) behind it. Though the action done sincerely, if the the uddesh is not pure, then it is useless and ends fruitless. Again, we can observe that a similar karmam done by different individuals, the result will be not similar, but varies. The reason being, the difference in the purity of uddesh only.
If all karmas done with the Easwara-smarana then the prerana ( cause/stimulus) will become pure. To gain Easwara-bhavam ( God's-effect) detachment from materialism is essential. Our actions, how far, is unselfish, to that extent the result will be superior. To get away from our ego, we have to uplift ourselves to our true nature : the Easwara-bhavam ( Godhood ). Om tat sat is the direction to achieve Godhood.
The Brahmam terms, om, tat, sat, : in this each term indicate the each nature of the Brahmam. OM is the symbol of Brahmam which is over and above all indriyas, mano, buddhi ( senses+mind+intelligence ). TAT indicates the Supreme 'PARAMATMA,' where creation (this universe) with names and forms happened and sustained. SAT means omnipresence : Truth is Sat, and it is Brahmam only. Whenever we spell OM,TAT,SAT, we pray Brahmam, and it makes us pure. From Brahmam the Catur varnam ( Brapmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra ) and vedas were born.
Further Lord Krishna tells when these terms are used : in the following slokams- 24...to...28.thus ending this chapter.
