Anudvegakaram    vakyam    satyam    priyahitam    ca   yat,

Svadhyayabyasanam    caiva   vangmayam    ucyate.

Anudvegakaram     =     Not provoking anybody;

Satyam   priyahitam    ca     =     Truthful,  friendly,   Soft;

Yat    vakyam     =     Speech;

Svadhyayabyasanam    ca     eva     =     ( and ) Learning ( study ) of Spiritual  ( Bharatheeya Rishies texts ) scientific Scriptures;

Vangmayam    tapah    ucyate     =      ( is called ) Tapas by Speech.

Vakku ( Speech ) is very strong medium of communication. It exposes the individual's power of intelligence, mental calmness, and self-control. Nobody will respect a person's speech which is not intelligent, calm, and control. The energy lost by human beings mainly through the speech only. If this is in control, then the energy is saved.

To maintain austerity of speech, it doesn't mean keep "Mounam" (  ( silence with no talking ).The speech power must be used to safe-guard the individual's saftey. Here the slokam says :

"Austerity of speech consists in speaking truthfully and beneficially and in avoiding speech that offends. One should also recite the Vedas regularly."

Anudvegakaram   vakyam  :-  One should not offend the listeners by provoking words/speech/talk . Our words shoul not be a insulting nature to others, should not injure the sentiments of the listeners, should not use our speech to abuse others, should not use sharp and harsh words. Because of our speech we may lose our friendships and relationships.

Satyam   Priyam   Hitam  :-  The words we choose to use should be truthful, interesting, and soothing. These quality will increase the sreyas of the speaker and the listener too. One who speak lies only, gradually he will lose his caitanyam. If the you speak truth, but this may be unwelcoming to others, better not to disclose/speak. That is, the words not only truthful but also interesting to others too.Apart from this, take care to notice the words are soothing too, not to make injury to the hearts.

Svadhyayam : -  It doesn't mean to keep mouth shut and sit in the corner as living dead. The uddesh ( aim ) is to emphasise save veeryam ( energy ) from useless talks, and the so stored veeryam may be used for "Atma-Sreyas".

Lord Sri Krishna thus proved this tapas of speech through out his life...( read Srimad Bhagavatam)
