Chapter- 8. ( Aksharabrapmayogam)


Slokam-12 & 13. 

Slokam-12.


Sarvadvarani    samyamya    mano    hrudi    niriddhya    ca,


Murddhanihanyadhayatmanaha      pranam     asthito    yogadharanam.



Sarvadvarani    samyamya     =     Controlling all the doors of sense-organs;

Manaha    hrudi   nirudhya     =     Confined  the mind  in the heart;

Ca    atmanaha    paranam      =     ( and ) Also, the atma (soul) the life air;

Murdhani    adhaya                    =      Fixed   on the head;

 Yoga-dharanam     asthitah   =      ( kept ) the mind's activities ( thoughts ) in the inner atma (self).



The yogic situation is that of detachment from all sensual engagements. Closing all the doors of the senses and fixing the mind on the heart and the life air at the top of the head, one establishes himself in yoga.

Controlling the [nine] gates [of the senses], confining the mind to the heart and also fixing the soul's life-air [the attention] in the head one is situated in the yogic position.

One is in the position of uniting consciousness when one, self-controlled in relation to the sensory input and fixing the life force in the head, confines the mind to the heart.

To practise yoga, as suggested here, one first has to close the door of all sense enjoyment. This practise is called pratyahara, or withdrawing the senses from the sense objects. Sense organs for acquiring knowledge, such as the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and touch, should be fully controlled and should not be allowed to engage in self-gratification. In this way the mind focuses on the Super soul in the heart and the life force is raised to the top of the head. In the Sixth Chapter this process is described in detail. But as mentioned before, this practise is not practical in this age. The best process is Krishna consciousness. If one is always able to fix his mind on Krishna in devotional service, it is very easy for him to remain in an undisturbed transcendental trance, or in samadhi.


Slokam-13.


Omityekaksharam     brpmah   vyaharan    mamanusmaran,


Yah    prayati    tyajan    sa   yati    paramam   gatim.




Iti   brahma    om   eka-ak?aram  =    Thus,  absolute  the combination of letters, omkara, (supreme, indestructible) Pranava mantram;


Vyaharan                     =      (vibrating)  Chanting ( OM);

Mam   anusmaran   yah        =       Who  remembering  Me (Lord Krishna );  

Prayati   deham    tyajan    =    (and ) Leaves  (quitting ) his body;

 Sah   yati    paramam    gatim     =      He  achieves   supreme   destination  ( His supreme goal is achieved ).




After being situated in this yoga practise and vibrating the sacred syllable om, the supreme combination of letters, if one thinks of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and quits his body, he will certainly reach the spiritual planets.

Chanting AUM (OM), the one syllable of the spirit, anyone who remembers Me leaving behind this body achieves the supreme goal.

Anyone may achieve that supreme state who, leaving the body for what it is, in the remembrance of me vibrates AUM, the one syllable of the spirit. 


It is clearly stated here that om, Brahman, ( Lord Krishna ) are not different. The impersonal sound of the Lord  is om, but the sound ( mantram) Hare Krishna contains om. It is clearly recommended in this age that if one quits his body at the end of this life chanting the mahamantra, Hare Krishna, he will get his supreme goal.


Shut down the sense organs, withdraw the mind into the heart, place your breath at the top of your head and hold it there by yoga while chanting the syllable Om…which is the Self. If you then let go of the body you will realize your identity with Me.


1. Sarvadvarani   samyamya  -- means closing the gates of indriyas, that is..controlling fully the sense-organs, thereafter enter into meditation, otherwise meditation is not possible. 

2. Mano  hrudi  nirudhya  --  means keeping the mind inside the heart, that is.. though closing the gates of indriyas,  will not help fully, some  new objects may enter  and disturb, to avoid this problem, ( here the organ heart is not mentioned) put the mind in safe locker of inner atma.

3. Murdhani-adhaya-atmanh-pranam -- means withdrawing the intelligence from the attention of the whole body, and deposit into inner atma.

4. Omityekaksharam  brapma  vyaharan -- means By chanting OM, your body,mind, intelligence  must dissolve in OM, A total OMKARAM ( THE SOUND ) make yourself immerse in the pool of divinity and jeevatma moves fast like an arrow towards the target the Paramatma, the BRAHMAM.

5. Yah   prayati  tyajan  deham -- means "without any thoughts with complete concentration, chanting OMKARAM, withdraing from all body consciousness, one who attain the Paramatma.
Majority misunderstand the "deha-tyagam" that is ..death, a wrong notion of chanting om while  death. Correct tattvam is withdrawal  from  body-consciousness only.
